According to the most recent data available from the US Census Bureau, the number of disabled Americans is over 37 million. Whether a condition is mental or physical, if medical cannabis can help someone with a disability then it should be both accessible and reliable. State cannabis regulation has been a large step in the right direction, but there’s a long way to go before all those who can benefit from medical cannabis can legally obtain it.

Certain jurisdictions-most recently Washington D.C.-have legalized cannabis possession and use, but not its sale. Elsewhere, in states such as Colorado or Washington, those with a disability may have difficulty traveling to a recreational shop or medical dispensary.

In an effort to emphasize legal limitations, authorities in Washington D.C. have adopted a new motto: ‘Home use. Home grown’. In many cases well outside our nation’s capital, this suggestion offers the best solution for access to safe medicine. A simple in-home garden can provide a steady supply of cannabis and organic methods produce the highest quality yields.

Plants get hungry. They need a nutritious and well-balanced diet to live well, just like us. Similarly, avoiding processed and synthetic food is beneficial for plants as well as humans. Of course cannabis hardly has a choice about where it’s planted, so it’s up to the grower to provide the medium containing the most nutritious components possible.

Cannabis nutrients found in stores are certainly an option and many are effective when applied to specific situations. The cannabis plant however, has a span of nutritive preferences between its two primary subspecies (indica and sativa). Choosing individual components as needed across an entire grow cycle, especially one with different varieties, quickly becomes cumbersome. The best way to achieve the optimal organic harvest is to carefully select a soil mix containing everything cannabis needs from the start.

A few wise words from a growing guru, and dear friend of mine, have echoed with me for years: “Many swear by the KIS method.” His success at the time had me turning red in the face. With no more than a ragtag collection of garden supplies, he always managed to maintain a spectacular carefree grow.

My rival project was outfit with the works: advanced LED lighting panels, digital timers, inline fans, carbon filters, and a soil medium meant to be used in conjunction with a highly specific nutrient regimen. I monitored everything incessantly, imagining myself as some scientific prodigy with every gadget on the market.

I now know the untimely end of that project was inevitable. My convoluted setup collapsed under the weight of its own sophistication. No single error was to blame, rather it was the cascading failures of many unnecessary measures which ultimately doomed my crop. The amount of money I’d spent was heinous, and the result was sadly nonexistent.

Today I look back on that experience and laugh. It took the serendipitous discovery of Ideal 420 Soil to rekindle my gardening motivation, but I’ve since joined the ranks of the many my friend spoke of: those who swear by the Keep-It-Simple method. Ideal 420 Soil is now my blend of choice-producing flowers like it was developed especially for us KIS loyalists.

In certain climates, from Spring to Autumn, it’s possible to grow a bountiful outdoor cannabis crop. The sun is the best light there is, and wide open space gives plants room to branch out. While the potential of an outdoor harvest is great, it’s also limited by growing season and unpredictable environmental conditions.

Greenhouses offer a marginal solution, harnessing sunlight while allowing some degree of climate control. Indoor growing however, is the only way a cannabis to produce in fully controlled conditions.

The indoors provide the best protection from outdoor elements and contaminants. The ability to control light and dark all year long is also key to maintaining a perpetual harvest. Without the advantages of indoor growing, it would be impossible to meet demand in today’s expanding market.

Growing cannabis for the first time it can seem intimidating; there’s a lot to consider. The best approach for a beginner is to keep it simple. Once you’ve got your strain selections ready, they’ll need: a growing medium, nutrition, water, light, air exchange, and periods of total darkness. Luckily, Ideal 420 Soil has taken the guesswork out of the first two. The convenience of a water-only method leaves time to focus on the other essentials. Here are some quick tips on the rest:

The faucet can be a fine option for watering your crop. Tap water isn’t always perfect though, certain additives interfere with microbe activity and hinder growth. Since this isn’t necessarily evident as a deficiency, it often goes unnoticed and plants fall short of their potential. For organic gardens, natural or pure water sources are ideal. Depending on pH, rain and spring water are excellent choices since they contain essential trace elements. Purified sources are also nice for organic grows, the absence of dissolved solids makes distilled or reverse-osmosis water highly absorbable by plants’ roots. Be sure your containers have drainage, and water wisely!

Indoor grows allow environmental conditions to be monitored and controlled. Sunlight is forfeit, so artificial light becomes important. A solid option for a first-time grower is fluorescent lighting, since the equipment is inexpensive and energy efficient. The effect of fluorescent lighting is greatly determined by proximity to the canopy. Compared to standard tube bulbs, compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) offer the superior maneuverability necessary to make the most use of their benefit. CFL heat output is so low that often fan leaves will grow right into the spirals. Still, be weary of burns from prolonged exposure.

The best place to hang the lights is in a specialized tent. Grow tents are a prime option for indoor grows, especially smaller projects. They’re designed to allow air exchange through vents, and block out all light during the dark periods necessary for seed-free buds. Quality grow tents maximize light efficiency with an internal reflective surface as well as prevent contamination. Tents aren’t necessary until the flowering phase, so there’s no need to rush out and buy one before there’s something worthy of putting in it. Move at a pace comfortable for you!

If you get these essentials down, and pay close attention to the plants themselves, you’re well on the way to a bountiful harvest. Hydro stores tempt new growers with countless ways to get more sophisticated, including everything from advanced lighting systems to CO2 production units. However, until the basics are covered, it’s useless to waste hard-earned money on added variables (each with its own potential to backfire). Remember that the hard part, determining the best option for a growing medium and nutrient regimen, is already taken care of by Ideal 420 Soil. For the curious new grower, the rest of the home garden experience is freed up for exploration, experimentation, and enjoyment!
